Thank you all for your incredible generosity and support at this year’s Celebration of Light, Nazareth Guild’s primary fundraising event. Your contributions directly impact the lives of countless families in need by providing tuition assistance to students attending our seventeen Catholic schools in Eastern Washington. You are helping to bridge the gap for schools offering reduced tuition, ensuring that more children can benefit from a Catholic education.

Additionally, your support fuels grants for teachers’ professional and classroom development, along with school initiatives that enhance the growth and future of our schools. Together, we are not only empowering our students but also uplifting our entire community. Thank you for making a lasting difference!

Champion of Catholic Education Award

Michael Phan’s story is one of faith, perseverance, and selfless sacrifice. Born in Vietnam, Michael and his family fled their home country during the war when he was just eleven years old, eventually finding a new home in the United States. Having attended Catholic school as a child and raised in a devout Catholic family, Michael knew that when he became a father, he wanted his own children to experience the gift of a Catholic education.

To make that dream a reality, Michael worked tirelessly, often holding two or even three jobs at a time. By day, he served as a janitor for Spokane District 81, and in the evenings and on weekends, he worked wherever he was needed – at his children’s schools, their parishes, and his Catholic community – doing whatever it took to help pay tuition for his daughters. His efforts were also supported through the generosity of tuition assistance programs and the Nazareth Guild, but his greatest contribution was his unwavering determination and faith.

“Prayer is important to me,” Michael says. “During challenging moments, I looked at the cross and asked Jesus and Mary to give me strength to help my kids succeed. I continue to pray all the time.”

That faith-filled perseverance bore fruit, Michael’s children all graduated from Catholic schools, instilled with the same values of love, faith, and community that have guided his life. Even now, Michael continues to give back. He works seven days a week serving at St. Aloysius Parish during the evenings and at St. Aloysius School during the day, and he recently raised his paddle at the school auction to help other families afford Catholic education.

Michael embodies what it means to be a true Champion of Catholic Education, a man whose steadfast faith, humble service, and deep love for family and community reflect the very heart of Catholic education. His life reminds us that with faith and perseverance, great sacrifices can yield even greater blessings.
